Tulasi Dala is a novel written by the Kannada novelist, Honnappa Sheshagiri Gowda, which chronicles the life of Tulasi Dala. Tulasi Dala was born in 1824 as the daughter of a Muslim landlord, but she converted to Hinduism before becoming famous as a tulsi tandava devatha tula. This novel follows her life from her conversion to Hinduism through her wedding at age 14 and then takes us into her political career that started during British occupation. It also covers many important places in India's history including Mysore, Santiniketan and Paris. Gowda makes an effort to link tulsi tandava devatha tula to the Gandhi philosophy of non-violence. Gowda has written many novels in Kannada, including "Agraja" and "Kausalya". He won the first Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award for his novel "Viraatadanta". The novel was initially published in serial format in the Kannada language journal, Saraswathi. It was then published as a book by M. M. Kalburgi. A film of the same name was made based on this novel, released in 1996. It starred Aarathi, Malavika Avinash, Sridhar and Sadhu Kokila. The music was composed by Hamsalekha.
